How You Can Optimize Your Health & Fitness Routine

If you could live forever, would you? As humans, we've adopted a survival instinct, one where knowledge and tools come together to help us live well into our 80s and 90s. The greatest scientific breakthroughs have come from our ability to stay curious. We're constantly looking for a new tool to help us to live and stay healthy longer.

For me, growing old and losing my ability to perform at the level I can today is daunting. I want to enjoy each year as much as the last, but for many, that’s not possible. With more than 5 million people in the United States suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, the most common cause of dementia, we may be living longer but are we living the life we want?

As a yogi, I turn to the physical practice of yoga to keep my body running at 100%. I find this is the most gentle way to consistently nourish the muscles and organs in my body. Other people focus on a strict diet to stay in shape and some, well, some don't do anything at all. While understanding that 20-30 something's do tend to have a healthier body than the generation before, relying on the date of your birth doesn't exactly cut it.

That's where the iHeart comes in. When I found this device, I was absolutely astonished at what it told me about my health and my body. At 24 years old, I practice yoga 3-4 times a week and eat a clean diet. On the outside, I look like picture perfect health, but the iHeart said differently. With the information gathered from a 30-second test using the iHeart’s finger pulse sensor, I was able to see my Internal Age (37, yikes!) and utilize this data to inspire a change in my lifestyle.

Measuring Your Internal Age

The iHeart, to me, is a revolutionary way we can look at our health and lifestyle to change for the better. The system, created by Dr. Jess Goodman, is a wellness tool that measures our Internal Age. That is, how old we are on the inside based on our Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity. Without getting too deep into the science, it measures the stiffness of the Aorta, the body's largest blood vessel running from the heart through the chest and abdomen immediately in front of the spine.

Recent research on the stiffness of the Aorta provides insight to identify heart disease, stroke, and dementia, and having a tool, such as the iHeart, to catch this early on can truly save your life. Knowing that dementia and stroke are both apparent in my genes, I now have a deeper understanding of how I can prevent those health issues earlier on by catching that my Internal Age is further along than my actual age. Plus, the iHeart gives you actionable steps to take to adjust your lifestyle.

With media, we’re constantly being exposed to different health and fitness trends as if they are an all-curing prescription for the masses, but that’s simply not the case. Our bodies are unique and require different foods, exercises, and routines. Making Lifestyle Changes

The iHeart also proves that your typical workout may not be right for your body type. Rather than defaulting to “Oh, I’ll do this 3-4 times a week!” I can now approach my fitness regimen in a curated way that can actually impact and reduce my internal age. Maybe Vinyasa yoga isn’t the best for me, maybe cardio and restorative is more suitable; it’s all about finding a sweet spot that works for you.

Because the iHeart offers a simple and fast test, I am able to measure my Internal Age before and after practicing yoga allowing me to identify whether or not a type of practice benefits my internal health more so than another.

We may not be able to live forever, but having the knowledge to know how healthy we are offers empowerment to the individual. Our health is in our hands and with the awareness of what is going on inside we can shape how we live our lives.
