Four Routines That Actually STUCK With Me This Year
I’ll admit...I am NOT the type of person to develop habits easily. I don’t know if it’s pure laziness or disinterest, but making changes in my life is a slow moving train. I wish I had the type of motivation to adapt easily, I see friends start integrating these ah-mazing routines in their lives, going vegan or waking up every morning to head to the gym before the sun rises... But, that’s just not me.
So, when I actually do have a habit or routine stick, it means that it is the most kick ass routine ever. And, we’re all trying to live kick ass lives right?
In the past year, I have had four habits/routines that stick to me like glue and I’m going to share them with you because everyone deserves to feel as good, CLEAR and productive as I do when I am actively following these routines.
I try a lot of different things, throw a lot of crap at the wall hoping it’ll stick, but out of everything, below are my top five HELL YES things I try to do every day to make sure I am living a happy and healthy life:
1 - Practice Yoga
Small secret...I didn’t start really practicing yoga until January 2016. I was using ClassPass and jumped around from studio to studio, but it wasn’t until I found Indie Yoga (where I currently teach at!) that I began a love relationship with this beautiful practice.
Yoga is BEYOND helpful for releasing stress, tension, and things that no longer serve you. Not only do you get an awesome workout that tones and targets the entire body, but you get to leave with a clear head.
You don’t need to be able to touch your toes or do the splits to practice yoga. In fact, coming in with a beginner mentality is the best possible way to soak in all the juicy benefits. If you’ve ever been inclined to try out yoga, I highly recommend using ClassPass so you can try as many studios as possible before finding the perfect one.
What does perfect mean? It’s a combination of the studio itself, the teachers, and the way you feel after class. You’ll know *perfect* when you find it!
2 - Meditation
Meditation came into my life when I was enrolled in my teacher training at Indie Yoga. I was able to sit for a few weeks, but then I totally fell out of it (I told you!). But then, it came back again when I went to a day long immersion workshop and I am proud to say it is here to stay!
Meditation can be daunting and super intimidating because we have to sit with our thoughts and just breathe. We’re so used to distractions and when we meditate, we’re asked to block those out. Or, at least, allow our breath to be louder than any unnerving thoughts or distractions.
However, once you get into a routine of meditating every day, it is the most wonderful addition to your day. It’s not like something that you notice necessarily throughout your day, but more so you notice it on the days you don’t meditate. For example, it’s harder for me to fall asleep because I have racing thoughts.
I highly recommend meditation for anyone - but especially you guys that feel foggy or detached from your creative and focused side.
3 - Journaling
Journaling is the BEST way to work through the madness that is your mind and I always pair journaling with meditation. After I sit for about 10-15 minutes in meditation, I’ll pull out my journal and free write for as long as I feel inspired. Sometimes that is only a few sentences and other times it’s a few pages. The point of journaling isn’t to be structured, it’s to let yourself flow.
Journaling is also great for expressing emotions and feelings. Whenever I’m upset or inspired, I pull out my journal and get it out. This allows me to separate myself from the feelings and usually look at my emotions from an outsider’s perspective.
Lastly, journaling allows my Higher Self to flow through me. What I mean by that is I am able to tap into my more intuitive side and access Creative Ava. If I have a problem or a question that I need answering, I write it at the top of the page and let my scribbles figure it out. Pretty rad, eh?
4 - Morning “Me-Time”
This is something fairly new that I’ve integrated into my life after finishing my Reiki training. We’re so hardwired to wake up and check our emails and immediately jump into the day. This typically shuts me off from my creative side and instantly connects me to the reactive to-do list side of my brain.
Instead of waking up and checking the notifications on my phone, I go straight into the kitchen and make myself a cup of tea or coffee. After that is done, I head back to the bedroom, light a candle and meditate for 10-15 minutes. Following meditation, I journal and only THEN do I start my day in a much more relaxed state.
What routines have stuck with you?
While I wish I had a list of 20 routines that have made me into Wonder Woman, I’m a simple chick with my four, so what has stuck with you? Any daily habits, fun products, or routines that you HAVE to do to get on with your day?
Leave a comment below and let me know - who knows, maybe a year from now (jokes) I’ll be doing them, too!
