Wanderlust Oahu: Festival Recap
I sit with the soles of my feet glued together and knees wide on the plane back from O’ahu as I write this. Corey and I just wrapped up ten days in O’ahu and I am still overflowing with pure bliss from our time at Wanderlust Festival O’ahu. With festivals across North America sprinkled throughout the rest of 2018, I feel a burning pull to share my experience with you and invite you to attend the next Wanderlust Festival as soon as you can.
If you’ve never heard of Wanderlust, head to their website to learn more about their mission as a leading wellness and yoga brand on our beautiful planet. I first discovered Wanderlust when the book Wanderlust: A Modern Yogi's Guide to Discovering Your True North sparkled in front of my eyes begging me to open it up and experience it’s pages.
After devouring Jeff Krasno and each contributing author’s words from cover to cover, I sought out to attend Wanderlust Festival in Oahu. What lay in front of me, I had never even dreamed of.
Taking place at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of O’ahu, Wanderlust Festival took place March 1-4 and invited festival goers on a journey of yoga, spirituality, mindfulness, and wellness. Festival goers can choose their own adventure with multi-level yoga classes, meditation, breath work and more. Turtle Bay Resort offers an expansive lush property filled with villas, condos, hotel rooms, and my favorite, CAMPING!
Corey and I camped from Thursday to Monday morning and had the most dreamy time waking up and falling asleep to waves crashing right outside of our tent. I have attended many festivals before, and their camping situation was high-end to say the least. With heated showers, a cell phone charging station, and complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day, I would argue we were glamping if it weren’t for our cheap tent and crappy sleeping pads we picked up before heading into the festival - woops!
Wanderlust O’ahu boasted a lineup of world-renowned yoga teachers, speakers, and musicians that all showed up with their A-Game. When we first arrived, we unpacked our tent and scrambled over to Koya Webb and Max and Liz Lowenstein’s Acro Yoga workshop. Throughout the weekend, their dream team offered playful and challenging acro yoga workshops that promoted community, laughing, and A+ high fives (thanks, Max!).
After flying on Corey’s palms and toes, I made my way to Caley Alyssa’s LOVE to LOVE yoga class filled with heart openers and partner yoga poses. Time after time, Caley curates challenging and unique classes that leave me feeling ultra-connected to my body and breath.
Through meditation and traditional poses, our kula (community) practiced together and stepped outside of ourselves to experience everything that yoga really is. I felt the outline of my body dissolve in each class I attended, yet, felt innately connected to every limb, muscle, and bone.
Although I had attempted each pose a dozen times before the festival, Wanderlust Yoga Teachers are among the best yoga teachers in the world and curate an experience unlike any you would find in your traditional Vinyasa class. You may practice poses you “know,” but their stylistic and individual approach to teaching begs you to show up on your mat as the student we truly all are. As a yoga teacher, I left invigorated to incorporate their unique approach into my classes.
While I didn’t take a SUP yoga class, that was an option along with aerial yoga, horseback riding, zip lining, beachside trail runs and more. I did, however, book Corey and I for Surf 101 on the final day of Wanderlust and we had a blast in the water as I stood up on a board for my very first time!
In addition to yoga, Wanderlust Festival had multiple inspiring speakers and lectures throughout the weekend. The moment I stepped foot into the Speakeasy at Wanderlust Festival, I was flooded with the wisdom. The speakers provoke new neural pathways of actionable knowledge I could start implementing immediately. Whether you’ve skimmed the self-help section of the bookstore. Or have neglected to turn inward to change your life. Wanderlust brings in speakers that evoke emotion, change, and a greater understanding of how to step into the world as your happiest and most aligned self.
After attending Wanderlust Festival, I found myself illuminated by the teachings of their world-renowned speakers. I am now eager to continue spreading their message to as many willing ears as I can.
Wanderlust Festival Music
Ron Artis was the first act we listened to on Thursday night and he had us rockin’ out under the tiki torches. Local to O’ahu, I am grateful we experienced his soulful and blues-y rock to start our night on a good note - pun intended.
Xavier Rudd serenaded the crowd Saturday night. He has a rockstar ability to play guitar, drums, harmonica, and of course, the didgeridoo. I had no idea from listening to him on Spotify that he had mastered all of those instruments. Corey and I danced the night away in awe of his talent.
Of course, I had a couple of drinks from Naked Turtle Rum. We pranced into the Silent Disco as Xavier Rudd finished his encore song. This was my first experience of a Silent Disco. I don’t think I ever would have dreamed of the fun I had that evening!
I wish YUM was enough to explain how good the food was. Honestly, the vendors deserve so much more than that! From the decadent and savory crepes to the poke bowls. I could have easily spent my entire savings on the mouthwatering food at the festival. Best of all, Wanderlust Festival works with sustainable and conscious companies. All of which only provide the most organic and nourishing ingredients in their food.
Overall, the experience and community at Wanderlust O’ahu was one for the books. I can’t wait to get back to the next one. From the people I met to the teachers and speakers that filled us with knowledge. It is challenging to put Wanderlust Festival into words. The experience is more than a few sentences. It is an emotion. It's the feeling you get when you are filled with pure bliss, support and an energetic connection to the earth and the hearts beating around you. It is the inner guidance and trust in knowing that once you’ve left, you’ve found your True North. It's knowing that your life will never be the same.
