Protect Your Damn Energy Or Risk Losing It All

how to protect your energy from others.jpg

Whoa. That’s a bit of an aggressive blog post title, wouldn’t you think?

Energy - your sacred energy specifically - is something to get serious about. Because if you’re not aggressively protecting your energy, you’re allowing people to aggressively take it from you.

And if people are able to take your energy from you? You risk losing it all.

I know it’s not the easiest thing to read, it certainly isn’t the easiest concept to grasp, but stay with me here.

Absolutely everything - and I mean everything - is energy. From your toes to the breath you take, to TIME itself. We give and receive energy on a second by second basis, so why the hell wouldn’t you be protective of what is coming in and what is going out?

Outside of feeling “energized” or awake, energy itself was a challenge for me to wrap my head around for awhile. When friends told me they were empaths and felt heavily affected by others energy, I brushed it off and thought I was pretty damn good at not feeling too far into what others around me were experiencing. For example, whenever anyone got emotional, my go-to thought was “please don’t cry.”

If that is where you’re at, don’t worry, I get it. Honestly, my skin still slightly crawls when people start to cry around me.

It’s not because I’m a complete asshole, I just process energy differently than those people that will cry right alongside you (Does that even help, like, really?).

You might process other people’s energy differently, too. That is why it is essential to read the following practices that I’ve learned and how you can incorporate them into your life:

Let’s do an energy inventory before I get started.

Take a mental note if any of the following resonate with you:

  • You don’t mind being alone and often don’t feel lonely when you are.

  • You have a close-knit circle of people and prefer to spend your time with them over going out and meeting a ton of new people.

  • If you have a social day of seeing lots of friends or going out, you need a day or two to recover and just be alone.

  • Sometimes it can be challenging to fall asleep at night because you recollect different conversations throughout your day and often feel anxious about how they unfolded.

  • You are viewed as strong in your group of friends and often have to be that for everyone around you.

  • You have trouble saying no because you don’t want to make other people around you feel bad or alone.

  • You will let other people influence your decision even if it is something that you may not want to do.

  • You feel exhausted after long days of being around people.

These are just a few examples of ways in which you can determine how you store other’s energy in your body, give your own energy to others, and even how you are unknowingly letting people rob you of your precious energy.

How do I know?

Because I am every single one of those things. I can’t say that I have perfected the art of energy protection, but I’ve gotten very good at becoming aware of people in my life that drain me, situations that I need to avoid, and ways in which I can restore my energy and get back to my highest state of being.

5 Ways To Protect, Restore, and Heighten Your Energy

Below is a list of things that I do either every day or on an as-need basis to protect, restore and heighten my energy. These practices will leave you aware of the ways in which you are giving your energy up and provide you with the tools you need to not only restore your energy but thrive in a world that is constantly asking more of you.

Meditation

I know meditation can be intimidating. I’ve been on and off the meditation wagon many times since I first started exploring my yoga practice and I realize now that the reason it was so challenging to start with was all of the stored energy in my body. It was uncomfortable to sit with but necessary. If you want to restore and protect your energy, start here.

You don’t have to start with anything more than 3-5 minutes of meditation. Make it easy for yourself by easing your way in rather than jumping in head first. Over time, 5 minutes will be a breeze and you’ll want to increase your time spent meditating.

It’s also important to note that when meditating, it is okay to have thoughts. We’ll never be completely thoughtless, so rather than beating yourself up for not having a still mind, know that as these thoughts come up, your body is actually releasing the stress associated with them. This is exactly why it is key for restoring your energy!

If you need a good place to start with meditation, I personally love a protection meditation that I’ve been incorporating into my morning since my Reiki training last year. As you close your eyes, imagine a white light bubbling around you - almost like a bubble - and throughout your meditation continue this visualization. For a full guided protection meditation, you can also download my meditation album here.

Social Detox

Don’t worry, this isn’t a full social media detox - although, that can certainly be helpful if you feel drained after scrolling through the ‘gram. This social detox is actually a precise exercise in protecting your energy from situations or people that keep your energy low rather than heightened. My fiance, Corey, shared this with me and I absolutely love it. If you want to protect your energy, start here.

Pick an activity or person that drains your energy. For me, it is going out to dinner. I hate spending the money and I find that there are so many different ways to spend time with people that don’t include chewing and talking at the same time.

Whatever you choose, set a 30-day detox for the activity or person. So, if someone asks you to go out to dinner, you can say, “Sorry, I’m doing a 30-day detox on going out to dinner. Why don’t we go to yoga instead?”

This is an awesome way to not offend anyone (because God help us if someone gets offended we don’t want to spend $30 on a mediocre salad from Cafe Gratitude - yeah, I said it) and also start to take control over the activities that you want to see more of in your life. You might even encourage your friends to be a little bit more creative with how they choose to spend their time, too!

Breath of Fire

Breath of fire, skull cleansing breath, kapalabhati pranayama - whatever name you’ve heard in the yoga studio or your favorite kundalini class, this breathwork style gets shit done. I try to do it every morning because it is amazing for clearing any energy in the body and brain as well as increasing my energy before I jump into the day. If you want to heighten your energy, start here.

It is an advanced yogic breath that clears the body of stress, toxins, feelings of sluggishness and replaces it with clarity and energy. It’s awesome to do before you sit down to meditate because your mind has released a ton of thoughts that would usually get in the way.

The breath is done through forceful exhales and effortless inhales. The easiest way to think of it is to pretend you are a dog panting then seal the lips to continue on for 30-60 breaths. The belly button sucks in towards the spine on every exhale, so it helps to place a palm on the lower abdomen when you’re just starting to learn this breath.

Cord Cutting Exercise

I remember the first time I did this cord cutting exercise in a yin yoga class. The simple visualization relieved so much anxiety I felt around relationships with certain people. It is an easy practice to do at any point in your day when your thoughts are flooded with worry about others. If you want to restore your energy, start here.

This cord cutting exercise is done through meditation. I recommend following along with my guided meditation for 10 minutes to really get the benefit of restoring your energy and personal power while also calming the nervous system.

As you close your eyes in meditation, start to visualize a person or event that is causing you worry or stress. Imagine a cord attached from your heart to theirs - I always like to imagine it shining gold to make the visualization vibrant in my mind. With every breath in, imagine that cord starting to fray in the middle of you and that person. With every breath out, imagine the cord completely cutting loose and returning back to your heart.

This visualization is a powerful way to restore your energy back to your own heart, while also protecting yourself from other people’s energy.

Crowd Out

This is something that I’m currently working on, so join me in the crowd-out method! If you feel like you have a ton of different energy-sucks in your life, start here to heighten and restore your energy.

Whether it is a group of people or a job negatively affecting your energy, you can use this concept to slowly back away from them and find heightened energy from other areas of your life. A simple concept, start to find positive activities and people that you want to surround yourself with. It could be a cool girl on Instagram that lives in your city or a new yoga class you like.

Rather than saying yes to things that rob you of your energy, start to say yes to these new activities. I know it can be uncomfortable to put yourself out there at first, but you need to get uncomfortable to get comfortable. Your energy is not something to be easy-going with. As you start to fill up your time with these good things, you’ll notice you no longer have time for the negative.

By crowding out the negative with positive, you are proactively protecting your energy, restoring your energy and heightening your energy all at once. You are creating a new frame for life and a new standard for your relationships - not only with others but yourself too. That, my friends, is a powerful fucking statement.

I’d love to hear from you now: How do you protect your energy? What situations or people in your life do you need to let go of? How can I support you in your journey of creating your uniquely alchemized life? Leave a comment below and know that YOU and your energy are so damn worth it, so protect it like your life depends on it - hint: it does.
