Biohacking: What it is and how I do it

Whether you just entered the wellness space or have been around for awhile, I’m sure you’ve heard of Bulletproof and Dave Asprey. Asprey is the king of biohacking, and to be honest, for awhile I had no idea what that meant. Yet, I drank the kool-aid and followed his recommendations to biohack your way to a better life.

Okay so, maybe it’s not that culty - I did some research on biohacking and realized that it is so much more than just drinking MCT Oil with grass-fed butter in your coffee every morning.

What is biohacking?

Biohacking is actually really freakin’ cool. It’s the process of making changes to your lifestyle to essentially “hack” your biology and feel your best. That certainly doesn’t feel like a cult to me!

There are so many ways that we can bio-hack - in fact, you’re likely already doing some of these. Because the truth is, everything we do, eat, think, speak, and process effects our body in some way.

Given this knowledge, we truly have the power to take control of our health and be empowered beings. To feel incredible and to look incredible, that’s not too much to ask, right?

Why you might want to try biohacking:

Like I said, you may already be biohacking and not even know it! That’s what is so cool about this whole process, it’s literally you becoming aware of your body and taking care of it so you can feel great and live a healthy and enhanced life.

But, if you feel like you haven’t been biohacking, here’s some reasons why you might want to start:

You feel tired, lethargic or slow.

It’s hard to wake up in the morning and hard to stay focused.

You’re hormones feel out of whack (loss of period, heavy period, emotional ups and downs).

Your skin feels and looks older than your age.

Your stress levels are through the roof.

Your diet feels like it can be improved.

Your gut isn’t digesting and moving nutrients through you efficiently (don’t shy away from poo talk!)

Do any of these sound true?

Even if you feel like you answered no to all of those, there is still an opportunity with biohacking to improve your state of being. So, with that being said, here are my favorite easy ways to biohack that you can start TODAY.

1 - Add in CBD

Our bodies have what is called the “endocannabinoid system” and this system works with all the other systems in our body. It is essential in maintaining homeostasis in the body and assist in managing cellular responses to incoming stressors or external forces.

CBD is such a rad product because it works directly with the endocannabinoid system that is naturally produced and functioning in the body. It’s non-psychoactive and helps to regulate stress, enhance sleep and reduce inflammation.

2 - Meditation

Say, what! Meditation is a form of biohacking? Why, yes, it is! And, it’s one that is completely free! Meditation is an ultimate biohacking tool in today’s age because we are constantly surrounded by noise (taking it in, speaking it out) and absorbing all of that information and energy that comes with it.

Meditation is a tool for you to find stillness, space, and a direct connection to your brain. With a 15-20 minute daily practice, you’re taking 3-5% of your day to nourish the most vital organ in your body. It reduces stress, aids with sleep, develops our awareness, and reduces the mental time travel that keeps us worried about the past and anxious about the future.

3 - Elimination Diet

Did you ever think that an elimination diet is a way to biohack your health? Of course it is! Through an elimination diet, you are removing all potential foods that can likely cause an inflammatory response in your body. For me, this looked like removing eggs, meats, dairy, gluten, and grain.

After removing all potential allergens, you want to slowly add them back in one by one and monitor the physical and mental response 24-48 hours after eating. This is a beautiful way to gain awareness of your body while also adjusting your diet to eliminate the foods that you may have a sensitivity to.

While that doesn’t mean you have to cut it out forever, it’s a great barometer for you to know if you eat something how you may feel or look a few days after.

4 - Earthing

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about earthing on the blog - but it’s still one of my favorite ways to reconnect. When I found out it is a way to biohack, I wasn’t surprised! Earthing is another free way for you to start enhancing your life and all you have to do is kick off your shoes and plant your feet in the grass, sand, or dirt!

When we spend time barefoot on the earth, our feet act as electrical currents, allowing the natural electrical charges that the earth produces to flow through us. Earthing can improve your sleep, reduce inflammation and get your daily dose of vitamin D!

5 - MCT + Butter Coffee

Alright, pulling this one straight from the biohacking king himself, Dave Asprey! I absolutely love my morning bulletproof coffees and can feel the difference when I’ve drank a coffee with MCT oil versus a regular black coffee.

MCT Oil is essentially a more powerful concentrated version of coconut oil, so you can always use coconut oil if you have that handy. I’ve written blog posts on my favorite coffees, which you can find here, but essentially I combine black coffee, MCT oil, grass-fed butter and Vital Proteins Collagen creamer in a blender with a pinch of cinnamon. No sugar necessary, it is so creamy and delicious!
