The Super Plant That Saved My Skin This Summer

aloe vera uses with skin

There is no denying summer is my favorite time of year. I love the sun, heat, warm water, and excuse to wear bikinis 24/7. I’ll never leave Southern California for the fact that we only have two seasons: Spring and Summer. You can keep your pumpkin spice lattes and sweaters, I’d much rather have a non-alcoholic spritzer and my favorite Free People jumpsuit.

The only downside to the summer months (besides not having AC), is the unavoidable sunburns, inflamed skin, and occasional breakout from sweat and sunscreen. Sure, I wear a hat and SPF on my face whenever I leave the house, but that’s not a foolproof plan to avoid the sun entirely.

If you’ve been following me on social media, then you know about my recent partnership with Face Reality Acne Clinic. I’ve been using their product line to clear my acne for over two years, so I was beyond excited when they wanted to work with me to share their line with you guys.

Today, I am going to share with you my favorite super plant to use during the summer, why it is so good for your skin, and a few of my favorite products and uses. Can anyone guess what it is?

If you guessed ALOE VERA, you are correct! (And I ‘aloe’ you so much for your skin knowledge!)

The Benefits of Aloe Vera for the Skin

Okay, so the Egyptians called aloe “the plant of immortality” - um YES, please. Various studies have been conducted to examine the benefits of aloe vera for the skin and while you likely know it as a tool for combatting the heat of a sunburn, there are so many more beauty benefits that I had no idea about. From dry skin to acne, below I’ll share a few major uses that made me fall in love with this super healing plant.

1 - Moisturizer

It moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel. This is so important for those of us with acne-prone skin or oily skin.

2 - Acne treatment

Aloe vera contains Auxin and Gibberellins which are two hormones that provide wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Gibberellin acts as a growth hormone and stimulates the growth of new cells while allowing the skin to heal quickly with minimal scarring.

3 - Anti-aging

Aloe vera contains antioxidants including beta-carotene, vitamin C, and E that all can help improve the skin’s natural firmness while keeping the skin hydrated.

As you can see, with benefits like these, it is a no brainer to incorporate aloe vera into your skincare routine.

My Favorite Products with Aloe Vera

While I absolutely love cutting a stem from my aloe vera plant and rubbing it all over my face, shoulders, and hair, the less messy option is products that come with aloe vera as the main ingredient. Here are a few Face Reality Acne Clinic products that I can’t live without - they are all PERFECT for summer time (and all the time!):

calming facial toner with rosewater and aloe

Calming Facial Toner

This gentle toner is perfect for any skin types and smells SO GOOD. It is a combination of aloe and rosewater so it is perfect for calming redness and inflammation. I’ve been carrying it around in a spray bottle like a rose water mist so freshen up throughout the day - such a game changer!

hydrabalance hydrating gel with aloe vera

Hydrabalance Hydrating Gel

If my skin could drink water, this is what it would feel like. The Hydrabalance Hydrating Gel has been in my skincare routine for over two years and it is my absolute favorite moisturizer on the planet. It is so lightweight and especially nice if you spend a few extra minutes in the sun and need the cooling relief of aloe vera. I used this throughout all of South America when my shoulders or chest were sunburnt.

Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 30

Everyone needs a sunscreen and this one is definitely my favorite. While it is a moisturizing SPF, it doesn’t have that thick feeling that a lot of other sunscreens have. This makes it perfect for applying under makeup and lasting throughout the day.

Aloe Vera Skincare Routine

All of these products work WONDERS together and can be used daily for best results. First, start by cleansing your skin (in the morning I was once with Face Reality’s Ultra Gentle Cleanser - at night I wash my face twice to ensure I get all the dirt off).

After you pat dry your skin (don’t rub the towel across your face ALWAYS PAT!), you can use a cotton ball or cotton round with a few drops of the calming facial toner over your face. I use organic cotton balls from Target. Start with the forehead because that is the thickest skin on the face then work your way through the cheeks, chin, and nose.

Allow a few minutes for your skin to absorb the toner, then move on to the Hydrabalance gel. If you like using serums, I absolutely love the Mandelic from Face Reality. It’s made with almonds and hydrates while exfoliating (perfect for acne scars and hyperpigmentation). You would apply your serum before applying Hydrabalance.

In the morning, after you apply the Hydrabalance, you can apply a layer of the Moisturizing Sunscreen. This would go underneath any makeup you plan on wearing. Obviously, you don’t need sunscreen at night, so instead, I use a benzoyl peroxide from Face Reality (it’s called Acne Med 10%).

All of Face Reality’s products that I’ve listed with aloe vera are available for purchase on their website. Besides the Ultra Gentle Cleanser, the other products I’ve mentioned have active ingredients which require a visit to a Certified Face Reality Acne Clinic. If you are struggling with acne, I highly suggest finding a spa in your area that offers their treatments and products. My life has been forever changed with their protocols and products!
