The Top 3 Reasons I Take Supplements + What’s In My Daily Routine

choosing the best supplements

The supplement industry is ridiculously confusing at times. Between my favorite Instagram pages sharing different brands, the companies I see at events, and the books that share best practices for different health issues, I went through a phase of buying and trying everything on the market.

I’ll be honest, a lot of what I found did absolutely nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

This, of course, became increasingly frustrating as time went on. Six weeks on the same supplement, still same issues. Six weeks and my pores were no smaller, my skin not anymore elastic.

Can you relate?

The supplement industry is huge and booming and while it is INCREDIBLE that so many of us are starting to look to holistic health as a way to heal and maintain our bodies ultimate health, it is important that we are being intentional with what we’re putting in our bodies and really tuning into what’s working and what isn’t working.

Tune Into What You Need

If you’re new to taking supplements or at a point in your life where you are overwhelmed by the noise coming at you from every direction, the first step in finding your supplement routine is tuning in to what you need.

I am a huge proponent of intuitively checking in with your body to determine what would be best for you and ultimately if you have major health issues, I’d also suggest consulting with a functional medicine doctor.

For me, the top three reasons I take supplements are for my gut health and digestion, increased energy and focus, and reduced inflammation and brighter skin.

Through meditation, intentional eating, journaling and really becoming aware of how different foods and activities affected my body, I was able to intuitively come to this conclusion. I tracked the way I felt after I ate different foods, I noticed how it impacted my skin and energy, and kept a note of it all in a journal.

At that point, I read up on different side effects via reputable sites as well as books like Beyond the Pill by Dr. Jolene Brighten (highly recommend if you’re thinking of getting off birth control) and recognized that a lot of my issues were stemming from my gut and my liver. Both being vital organs in the body, they were directly affecting my energy levels and the clarity of my skin.

With this knowledge, my next step was to find supplements that supported the health of my gut, liver, brain, and skin.

How To Choose The Best Supplement Brands

Now to the more difficult step - but don’t worry, I got you with my favorites - RESEARCH! Not going to lie, researching and digging into supplement brands can be really confusing because there are a lot of factors that go into what makes a supplement good or bad.

You want to make sure when you are looking at different brands that the supplements are highly absorbable. Water-soluble vitamins are easy for the body to digest so you are absorbing more of the nutrients.

Have you ever taken a bunch of multivitamins and had super neon yellow pee afterward? TMI, maybe, but that is a sign that it’s just running right through you. Bummer, but that’s why I’m sharing my favorite supplements that I take on a daily basis.

You should also look at reviews and ask around. Make sure the companies are testing the potency of their products and sourcing from a high-quality natural place rather than creating a synthetic version in a lab. Additionally, finding brands that are NSF GMP-registered by the FDA is key too.

My Daily Supplements

I take these supplements on a daily basis for gut health and digestion, brighter skin, and more focus and energy. If you are struggling with any of those things, I highly recommend grabbing one or all of these to incorporate into your daily routine.

Wild Microalgae - I use Essentials Packets from New Earth

The more you can supplement your diet with nutrient-dense organic food, the better. Organic Wild Microalgae has been a major game changer in my daily routine when it comes to enhancing gut health, clearing brain fog, and enhancing overall energy.

Microalgae is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on our entire planet and New Earth sources their microalgae from Klamath Lake in Oregon. Microalgae is rich in plant phytonutrients, plant-based proteins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, as well as a wide spectrum of micronutrients.

This is one of those supplements that you can take for a broad range of benefits - I swapped out my daily multivitamin (you know, the one that ran right through me) for New Earth’s Essential packets and haven’t looked back.

Outside of organic Wild Microalgae in the Essential Packets, they also have probiotics which I’ll get into below.

In the meantime, you can check out New Earth here and use my code ALCHEMIZED for 10% off your order.

Probiotics - Also in the Essentials Packets from New Earth

You’ve more than likely either tried a probiotic, are currently on one or have heard of probiotics before. Probiotics feed the bacteria in your gut to help support digestion and keep your gut working properly. I take probiotics every day and bring them with me when I travel because they help to break down any bad bacteria that may cause stomach issues - probiotics were my saving grace in Bali, to be honest.

The beauty of the Essentials Packets by New Earth is that they are daily packets that include the organic Wild Microalgae, acidophilus and bifidus which are respectively probiotics that serve 5 billion viable Lactobacillus acidophilus cells to the body and 3 billion viable Bifidobacterium bifidum cells. I know it’s confusing, but it is a pure strain that is specifically cultivated to promote intestinal health.

If you struggle with digestion, skin issues like cystic acne, brain fog or fatigue then I’d highly suggest investing in a probiotic or blend like the Essential Packets.

Vitamin E - I use Hum Nutrition Red Carpet

Besides breakouts from food sensitivities and my gut, my other main concern about my skin is it’s texture and brightness. There are some days when I wake up and my skin just looks dull - it’s definitely not the vibe. I’ve been taking Vitamin E consistently over the past two months and have noticed a major difference in my skins vibrancy.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and when taken daily can neutralize free radicals that damage collagen and dry the skin. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a healthy dose of Vitamin E can prevent premature aging and damage.

Hum Nutrition is a favorite of mine for skin-related supplements. They are super high-quality and really do make a difference. Plus, the Red Carpet supplement also promotes shiny and thicker hair so it’s a win-win! Like any supplement, you may not see changes for the first few weeks, but I promise if you give it time, it works!

Omega 3 - I use Nordic Naturals

Omega 3 fatty acids are essential in brain health and fighting inflammation. I first starting taking it daily when I was introduced to it by my acne specialist and it has been a staple in my supplement routine for the past two years. It helps to manage oil production which has been major for me since I have super oily skin.

Nordic Naturals is a great brand that I’ve found, but there are many different companies that make a great Omega 3, remember, do your research and find the one that is best for you and your needs.

Magnesium - I use Natural Calm Powder

Magnesium is a dream supplement - literally - because it helps with sleep and the natural function of our muscles. I actually was told to start taking magnesium because of my migraines, but if you are active and often workout, it’s a great way to give your muscles love.

It is the fourth most abundant nutrient in our entire body, so taking a magnesium supplement is key to keeping your body regulated and nourished in the ways it needs. It’s in your bones, your muscles, soft tissues, and even your blood. If you have chronic inflammation in your body, taking a magnesium supplement, from my experience, can help to reduce inflammation.

I love Natural Vitality’s Natural Calm Powder and combine it with water every night a few hours before going to bed. It’s flavorless and makes my evening supplement routine more accessible since I’m not swallowing down a half dozen pills.

Supplements take time

When I first started taking supplements, I’ll be honest, I was wanting to see an overnight change. The difference between taking natural supplements versus prescription medication is that it needs WAY more time to affect your body as it is a much lower dosage than you would get. This allows it to naturally work with your body rather than overwhelm the body.

If you are inspired to start taking supplements or look into these brands, remember that this is what works for me. This isn’t medical advice or meant to treat, cure or prevent any diseases, rather it is my routine and the brands that I love and use daily in my life.
