If you’ve stepped inside a yoga studio, chances are you’ve heard a teacher mention the chakras. Or you’ve seen a colorful drawing like the one below hanging on the wall. If you have no idea what the heck your teacher is talking about - no worries. I’ve got you covered in this post.
In Sanskrit, the word “chakra” means “wheel” and refer to the centers within our body where energy flows through. As you can see in the photo above, the chakras begin at the base of the spine and end at the crown of the head. When your chakras are balanced, energy flows freely through the body. When the chakras are out of balance, energy can get stuck in areas of the body causing physical, mental, or spiritual pain.
Each chakra has a number of attributes. as you work through learning about them below, you may find that certain attributes resonate or affect you more than others. Whatever speaks to you most is a great place to start when it...
During my 200hr yoga teacher training at Indie Yoga, I treated myself to one gift each month as motivation to stay persistent with my hours. One month, it was a larimar mala prayer necklace. The next, a fancy candle from 1502 Candle Co. My final month, however, was something even more special: my first pair of Alo Yoga goddess leggings. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that my love of Alo has spiraled out of control since then. One pair of leggings has easily turned into a majority of their line and I can’t say that I’m displeased with the fact that I rep Alo every.damn.day. Their clothes are the ultimate apparel for yogis - on and off the mat.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to teach at their HQ in Los Angeles and meet the team. I am still gushing over how incredible each individual is and how grateful I am for the experience. So I felt that it was absolutely essential that I share Alo with you guys, too.
And, before I go any further...no, this...
Over the weekend I went out to lunch with my fiancé. We had just finished our meal when I felt this wave of anxiety rush over me. Now, I’m not typically an anxious person, but when I feel the heaviness of my chest I know something is up and a mini-meltdown is only a few minutes away. Yes, I still have meltdowns. No, yoga doesn’t cure them 100% of the time.
We’re all human, and whether we like it or not, there are always going to be times where we feel stressed out and want to lay on our horn at the next helpless driver that cuts us off (Ok, yes, I did this and yes, my mom and sister were on the phone when it happened. Not proud.)
But, the power comes in how quickly you can bounce back. So today, I’m going to share with you my three steps to overcoming anxiety and stress. Please keep in mind that I am not someone that suffers from an anxiety disorder so these are natural ways to avoid working yourself up into a frenzy. If you do suffer from anxiety...
Imagine this: The year is 2012. I’ve arrived to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, fake ID in hand, VIP wristband around my wrist, and pasties doing their best to stay adhesive on my sweaty boobs. It was the first Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and boy, have I changed since then.
While late night dance parties fueled by Red Bull aren’t really my thing anymore, the festival girl within me has never died. The community that comes together at festivals is unlike any other and I always find myself longing for that connection after festival gates shut.
This year, you’ll still find me at festivals, running around and soaking it all in, but the name of the game is no longer “What DJ are you seeing?” Instead, I’ll be en-route to the top wellness and transformational festivals California has to offer. These wellness events are chalked full of inspirational and motivational speakers ranging from mindfulness to Ayurveda. Instead of...
As the elevator door opened, I instantly felt the tension release from my shoulders. I had never been to Trilogy Sanctuary before, but there was that familiar feeling I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Was it the scent of chai wafting in from the cafe or the inviting smiles of the employees?
Who knows, but I felt instantly at ease on Trilogy’s rooftop.
Trilogy Sanctuary opened their doors in 2014 on the night of a full moon (fitting, but we’ll get to that shortly!) in the heart of La Jolla, San Diego. What started as a rooftop yoga studio and cafe has blossomed into a world-renowned space for conscious yogis to gather.
After a few aerial classes under my belt, I had to sit down with the owner, Leila Dora, to learn more about how Trilogy came to be THE ambient locality in La Jolla.
Leila and her husband, Joe, opened Trilogy three years ago as an answer for the lack of communal space where individuals can gather, connect, and have fun alongside incredible yoga...
Happy New Year, Kicking Asana fam! 2017 was a crazy year. It was filled with so many incredible memories. Even so, if you’re like me you are READY to take on 2018 and make it the best year yet. On Sunday evening as we waited for the ball to drop, I made a point to sit down and write down everything that I wanted to achieve in 2018. And, rather than looking at each item as a “New Year Resolution,” I sat with my Passion Planner and created SMART goals.
I get it - there’s something tangible in the air around January that screams “New Year New Me!” but I’ve found - and maybe you have, too - that these so-called resolutions often end up being forgotten or ignored only weeks down the road.
The problem with resolutions is that they tend to be grandeur gestures of radical change in life asking us to stretch far too thin from what we are used to.
From “I’m going to go to the gym every day after...
San Diego is America’s Finest City - there’s no denying that. From the beaches to the ridiculously laid-back vibes. There’s never a moment when I don’t feel ultra relaxed calling San Diego home. I’ve explored everywhere from Cowles Mountain to Potato Chip Rock. However the one space I’ve yet to explore is the influx of new and inspiring yoga studios across San Diego. Over the course of this upcoming year, my goal is to experience as many yoga studios as possible in San Diego and Southern California and share them all with you. Have any recommendations? Leave them below in the comments!
After growing up in Los Angeles, it is safe to say I’ve seen a lot when it comes to yoga studios. The Corepower's of the world hooked me originally, but now I crave something deeper and more meaningful. While there are hundreds of yoga studios in San Diego to choose from, my goal is to find those that foster a practice that...
I’ll be the first to admit how easy it is to get swept up in holiday fever. I know that once Michael’s Craft Store starts lining their shelves with ornaments and Santa-themed tin cans for cookies that we’re about to be hit with an influx of ads and media illustrating the “perfect” Christmas. Whether it’s the stress of finding a gift for your man or crossing your fingers that you get the new Warrior Mat from Alo, in the end, the point of Christmas is to spend time with your loved ones and find gratitude for what you already have.
But, I know that’s easier said than done - coming from the girl who creates a Pinterest Christmas Wishlist board, Corey says it’s easier for him!
As a gentle reminder, I was inspired last night to put together five gifts we’re all given - regardless of your income, place of residence, or the number of people who surround you. I hope these leave you feeling a little bit more of the true “Christmas...
*Featured photo is my 2018 vision board with all the goals and dreams I'd like to achieve.* I’ve been ashamed lately. It’s not that I’ve done anything wrong. It’s that I’ve done nothing at all. I haven’t written for Kicking Asana in months.
Sure, there are new blogs on the site, but each of them are from pre-planned partnerships and collaborations. I still get to spill an essence of my being out in each one, but not in the way my personal posts get to tug at my heartstrings and expose a deeper side of me.
I haven’t really determined the “why” to the radio silence, but I have been able to catch it.
Have I done anything about it besides wallow and get angry at myself? Not until today. Not until this moment as my fingers glide across the keyboard, stumbling as they make their way from a-to-z.
When I first moved back from South America, I had so much space and it feels like nowadays that space has been taken over my to-do lists and...
If you’ve been reading Kicking Asana for awhile, then you know self-love is my JAM. It’s not because I love taking bubble baths (I do) or need an excuse to treat myself (I don’t). It’s because I know the intrinsic value of taking a moment to step back, turn inward, and check in.
It certainly was not always this way.
Most of us struggle with the notion of self-love. In a society that pushes us to put other people’s needs in front of our own, we’re never really asked or encouraged to do something for ourselves. We worry it could be considered “selfish.”
After I enrolled in my 200-hour teacher training last fall, my thoughts shifted from thinking self-love is selfish to realizing self-love is self-less.
When it comes to love - in all aspects - you can’t pour from an empty cup. Self love is really where all love begins, but we’re so wired to believe that love is external.
Since my training, I have had the opportunity to...
