What I Realized After Being Mugged At Knife Point in Bogotá

On my first day in Bogotá, my partner and I were walking in La Candelaria area around 2pm. We were on a trafficked street near the university, with a group of people ahead of us. We were on our way to ride the gondola up to overlook the city at Mount Monserrate, it would be our last adventure of the day before heading back to our Air BnB in the busy area that is La Chapinero.

Abruptly, two tall Colombian men pushed into my partner and my immediate thought was for them to watch where they were walking. What idiots. But then, one dug his grimy claws into my shoulders and pushed me fiercely, slamming my back into the chipped concrete wall and started yelling in words I could not understand. I can still see the deranged look in his eye as he tossed me aside to steal from my partner.

We were being mugged.

I can't recall much from the incident, as it happened so quickly and my fight instincts took over. I remember yelling weakly while pulling one of the men off of my partner....

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to pick your yoga practice back up (or start one!) Finding the right yoga mat to journey with you on your practice is like searching for a soul mate — all mats are not created equal! A great mat can kick your practice up a notch, but before investing, it’s important to do your research!

That’s why the research team at Reviews.com spent six weeks testing over 30 popular mat options on the market. After consulting with yoga professionals and students, along with hand-testing each mat in both moderate and hot climates, they were able to narrow down their top 9 choices, which exhibited the best traction, stability, support, and versatility to complement any yoga practice. While there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution, consider the following options when choosing your mat:

A Yogi’s Journey Off The Beaten Path And Into The Harmonious Jungle

Traveling to Costa Rica is like being plucked out of reality and placed into a jungle fairytale that I used to daydream of. From the mountainous jungles to the emerald ocean on the West Coast, it’s a country in which you can connect back to source. As in, a yogi’s dream for disconnecting from the mainstream and finding solace and serenity in a natural wonderland.

Across the country, you won’t be hardpressed to find yoga studios and retreat centers, but what makes one stand out from the next? We each have a yoga practice for a different reason, but we tend to all lean towards retreats for the same: peace and an exploration of our mind, body, and soul through movement and meditation.

While many flock to what has become the “Americanized” Nicoya Peninsula - known as the “yoga and surf heaven,” I opted to go off the beaten path and take a trip down the West Coast to find even more seclusion. What I found made me fall in love with my practice all...

A Thirty Day Yoga Challenge With The iHeart App

The first month of 2017 is wrapping up and so many of us are still hanging on to those New Year’s resolutions. Some, like myself, enjoy thirty-day challenges to dive head first into new habits, which is no surprise as it typically takes three weeks, or 21 days, for a routine to become a habit. In December, I discovered the iHeart pulse sensor that measured my internal age based on the stiffness of my core and spine. Through the use of their application, I was able to identify my aortic pulse wave velocity - or, how quickly my heart beat travels down the aorta. If you've been following along, you know that I was quite shocked to find my internal age at a whopping 37 years old! With that information, I knew I needed to make a change so I set out on a thirty-day challenge to lower my internal age.

The iHeart measures spine and core flexibility, so seeing that my internal age was much higher than my actual age (37 vs. 24) I knew the first place to start on my thirty-day challenge...

Staying Fit & Healthy While Traveling Should Be Your Goal For 2017

At the turn of the new year, we gather around our notebooks and journals creating a list of goals and resolutions we strive to achieve. More often than not, staying in shape or maintaining a healthy routine is at the top of that list, but as an avid traveler it is much harder to execute with the constant moving and change in diet. Who could blame you? One of the best parts of traveling abroad is trying new food and really getting a taste of their culture. Pun intended. Rather than going on an extreme diet and neglecting a huge part of your experience abroad, opt for an easier wellness plan, such as yoga,  that will ensure you’ll stay toned and fit as you rack up those passport stamps.

By integrating yoga into your travels, you are creating a consistency in your life that is hard to achieve whilst traveling. This sense of familiarity can give you comfort in times of feeling homesick and offers a way for you to show your body some love when it’s in an unfamiliar...

My Yoga Essentials: Must Haves For The Yogi

Let’s get real - sometimes walking into a yoga studio is the equivalent of walking down New York Fashion Week’s runway. Lululemon mixed paired with awe-inspiring mala beads is certainly my kind of fashion. There’s just something so appealing about a pair of cute leggings, I’m thinking it’s the comfort and the fact that I can drop into a stretch wherever I’d like.

I am a brand loyalist when it comes to yoga gear. It’s not often you’re able to find high-quality apparel and accessories without breaking the bank. Since my closet is made up of 99% yoga goodies, it only seemed right that I share my list of yoga essentials. The clothes, the jewelry, the mats, and the accessories have all been tried and tested to help me drop into my practice.

Affirmats Yoga Mats:

Your yoga mat is your sacred place where you get to journey inward and connect with your mind, body, and soul. Affirmats brings a fresh and inspiring design to what is typically a...

How To Upgrade Your Life in 2017

Ditch the term “New Year’s Resolution.” It’s overplayed with a connotation of failure attached to it. We’re all programmed to be okay with giving up on our resolutions halfway through the first month of the year, anyways, so why not opt for a better term? Upgrading your life is the perfect way to look at goal setting, lifestyle change, and living life more aligned with your true north.

When we ask ourselves how we want to upgrade our life there are a few instant areas that arise: fitness, wealth, relationships. We want that toned body we promised ourselves last year, to fall in love, and to land the dream job but we rarely put together actionable items that can help us get to that point. I’m a firm believer in manifestation, but without the oomph you’re left daydreaming.

We become stagnant in wanting rather than proactive in doing.

Being aware of this static fault, the question remains: How do you shift your mindset from reactive to...

What I Learned From Indie Yoga's Teacher Training

Certificate in hand, I left Indie Yoga with a bittersweet feeling in my heart. I was so proud of myself and my group for everything we had gone through over the past three months. The ups, the downs, the upside downs, all of it was a wild journey that we had conquered together and a part of me didn’t want it to end. What we created over the course of teacher training was magic and I have yet to find anything in the world quite like this. Teacher training at Indie Yoga is more than learning the proper ways to queue someone into a yoga posture. It’s all the space in between those postures; it’s the journey and dance your mind, body, and soul takes to get there. There was never a point in time when we would look outside of ourselves to find the teacher that we’d become by the end of training, it was always something inside of us.

Yin and Yang

Being led by Jill and Fallon was a gift. A true duo mirroring yin and yang, there wasn’t a single moment when any...

Why Yoga: A Love Note To My Practice

I’ve always been one of those people that is generally good at most physical activity. I’m slim, fast, and strong making me a natural at a variety of sports including softball, soccer, and tennis. I tried it all, but it never stuck. There was something missing. The environment in these arenas always called for competition and comparison to others, often creating a sense of stress and need to prove something. To prove I was better, faster, stronger. You can imagine there isn’t much of a sense of zen.

“Do you want to take a hot yoga class with me?” A girlfriend asked when I was twenty years old. At that time, I had no idea I’d go on to religiously taking classes, becoming a yoga teacher, and creating this blog. At 24 years old, I’ve only scraped the surface and I’m aching to learn more:

Yoga Is A Catalyst

Yoga is a practice that digs deep into the depths of your mind, body, and soul. Through excavating the garbage, sifting through the...

How You Can Optimize Your Health & Fitness Routine

If you could live forever, would you? As humans, we've adopted a survival instinct, one where knowledge and tools come together to help us live well into our 80s and 90s. The greatest scientific breakthroughs have come from our ability to stay curious. We're constantly looking for a new tool to help us to live and stay healthy longer.

For me, growing old and losing my ability to perform at the level I can today is daunting. I want to enjoy each year as much as the last, but for many, that’s not possible. With more than 5 million people in the United States suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, the most common cause of dementia, we may be living longer but are we living the life we want?

As a yogi, I turn to the physical practice of yoga to keep my body running at 100%. I find this is the most gentle way to consistently nourish the muscles and organs in my body. Other people focus on a strict diet to stay in shape and some, well, some don't do anything at all. While...
